1894 to 1975 Gangtok was the part of the Namgyal kingdom and was the center of Namgyal administration. After 1975 Sikkim became a state of India and Gangtok the capital of the state. Kalim in local language means King’s Minister and Pong means Stronghold. So the name Kalimpong means Stronghold of King’s Minister. According to other theory, Kalibong is a type of fiber plant used for paper making the plant is found in Kalimpong and hence the place named as Kalimpong on the name of the plant.

The place is in the north east state of Meghalaya. It has an average height of 1484 meters and lies on the plateau in the southern part of the Khasi Hills. The place holds the crown of the wettest place on earth but now the crown shifted to the nearby Mawsynram. Cherrapunji is 50 km distant in the southwest direction of Shillong.

The name Cherrapunji derived from the word Sohra, Britishers pronounces it as Churra which means “the land of oranges”. Cherrapunji receives the annual rainfall of about 11777 mm. Cherrapunji is also famous for living root bridge in village Nongriat, which forms by the bio-engineering practice of locals. The bridge can bear a load of 50 people at a time.

Cherrapunji is a good place for trekking, rock climbing, river canyoning and camping. Some of the famous places to visit Cherrapunji are Nohkalikai Waterfall, Thangkharang Park, Double decker root bridge, khasi monoliths.

All of this place I have not visited yet. Love the view. This summer I end up at Korea. Surprising the weather not that hot.


I have read about the root bridge in the past and have already put it in my list. Will love to see it one day!


Charrapunji is credited as being the second wettest place on earth. I guess that Double Decker Living Root Bridge is amazing and that you really have to see it to believe it. This bridge seems nothing less than a man-made cum natural wonder 🙂
