Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and a beautiful place in the Doon Valley. The city is the gateway to Mussoorie and the Garhwal interiors. It has a good connectivity to the Haridwar and Rishikesh. The city is one of the most ancient in India.
It has been ruled by various dynasties – Mughals, Sikhs, Gurkhas and the British rule. Dehradun is located about 220 kilometers in the North of Delhi, the capital of India. The holy River Ganga and the Yamuna criss-cross the city quite beautifully.

It is believed that after the battle between Lord Ram and Ravan, Lord Ram along with his brother Laxman visited the place. Dronacharya, the legendary Royal guru in the epic Mahabharata, is believed to have been born and resided in Dehradun. Ancient temples and idols have been found in the areas surrounding the city which have been linked to the mythology of Ramayana and Mahabharata. These relics and ruins are believed to be around 2000 years old.
According To Huen Tsang
In the 17th century, the area was known as Sudhnagar and was described by the Chinese traveler Huen Tsang. Sudhnagar later came to be recognized as the name of Kaalsi. Edicts of Ashoka have been found in the region, along the banks of river Yamuna in Kaalsi indicating the wealth and importance of the region in ancient India.
Name Of Dehradun
Dehradun itself derives its name from the historical fact that Shri Ram Rai, the eldest son of the Seventh Sikh Guru Har Rai Ji, set up his “dera” (camp) in “dun” (valley) in 1676. This ‘Dera’ ‘Dun’ later on became Dehradun.
The climate of the city represents a sub-tropical atmosphere with cool winters, warm and a pleasantly cold spring is the best season for the sightseers to reach Dehradun and enjoy the environment there. The summer months are hot and monsoon stays tough. Due to the mountainous region, the town also includes a sufficient amount of snowfall in winter.
